Be prepared over holiday, say emergency services

-

CAIRNS Water Police together with search and rescue officers are urging Far North Queensland residents to be well prepared for all planned outdoor activities over the Easter holiday period.

With the Easter period typically a busy time for adventure seekers, Cairns Water Police Senior Constable Adam Blaik encouraged all boaties invest in good quality emergency communication equipment.

“People have become reliant on mobile phones, which unfortunately have limited coverage in some parts of the Far North,” he said.

“It’s always advisable to leave clear trip plans with someone at home so that if you don’t return by the agreed time, a search can be started.

“If you do happen to change those plans and stay away longer than expected, ensure you let them know.”

Boaties venturing on to Far North waterways are urged to also have consideration for other vessel operators, especially in busy areas such as boat ramps or popular places such as Lake Tinaroo.

Queensland Water Police, Maritime Safety Queensland, Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers will be on patrol over the Easter break. Hefty on the spot fines may apply.
