Lagoon is our centrepiece

-

THE Cairns Esplanade is the heart and soul of the city.

The lagoon and its surrounds are the best of any similar manmade structures in Queensland, if not in Australia.

It’s hard to believe already it is 15 years old but it has passed the test of time.

The $22.5 million lagoon was the first stage of the $32.5m Esplanade redevelopment which has evolved over the years to include Muddy’s Playground for children and the skate park and beach volleyball courts.

The lagoon and its “fish on the sticks” sculptures have become iconic.

When the project was first mooted there were plenty of detractors. Retailers said it would draw trade away from the CBD, greenies claimed it would harm the environment and ratepayers believed it was spending money on tourists to the detriment of suburbia.

But the area has become much loved by residents and visitors.

Tourists can’t believe it costs nothing to swim and relax in the lagoon. It draws families to the city who can spend all day in the area.

The project sparked the revitalisation of the port area too and from the far northern end of the Esplanade to the wharves is popular with people for walking, jogging and exercising.

It has become our city square, our centrepiece, our showcase.

The Esplanade Lagoon project has been money well spent and has enhanced what was once an ordinary part of town.

So happy 15th birthday. We look forward to your 21st. Nick Dalton Deputy editor
