Be generous to the Salvos

- Nick Dalton Deputy editor

IT’S only once a year that the Salvos put their hand out.

The rest of the year they are giving the less fortunate a hand, from food, clothing and accommodation to words of love and support.

The Salvos are an integral aspect of life in Cairns. As well as being a Christian church their range of services is second to none.

Crisis accommodation is provided at Centennial Lodge, supporting more than 500 people including children and serving 25,500 meals each year.

The Connect Cafe is a safe, informal and friendly place for people to have a coffee and chat with compassionate volunteers.

The Doorways and Salvos Connect offers practical emergency assistance for families and people under financial pressure.

Free “Moneycare” financial counselling helps people who struggle to make ends meet and pay their bills.

Their Red Shield family stores sell second-hand goods and raise money to fund their vital services.

The Salvation Army is planning to build a 42-bed aged care centre at Mossman.

Yesterday $42,000 was raised at the launch of the Red Shield Appeal in Cairns with an overall target of $100,000.

The Salvation Army’s Far North Queensland’s Corps Officer, Major Ben Johnson, says the appeal ensures that the Salvos can continue to, not only meet immediate needs, but also address the underlying factors of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in society and help them get back on their feet.

Give generously to the Salvos this Red Shield Appeal.
