KYM Wood and Nathan Reilly sprang a surprise on friends, family and work colleagues when they eloped to New York last month and tied the knot in Grand Central Station.

The couple, who own Domino’s in Sheridan St and Manunda, kept their plan under wraps and timed it with an international Domino’s rally in Las Vegas.

“We didn’t want to do anything huge and fancy,” says Kym. “We only told three or four people.”

Kym used Instagram to source a company which specialised in eloping packages, New York Dream Weddings, and opted for a ceremony under Brooklyn Bridge.

“We chose M May 19 19. I didn’t even realise it was the same date as the royal wedding.

“When we arrived in New York the night before, it was cold and raining. The forecast for Saturday wasn’t much better, so I emailed the organiser and asked if we had any other options. He suggested Grand Central Station.

“At first I was a bit unsure. But then I thought, ‘what the hell’. And to be honest, it turned out for the best. It was warm inside, the building was beautiful and even though we didn’t have a single family member with us, we had a huge crowd at our wedding.

“People formed a circle around us. Some stopped to take pics. Then at the end, when the celebrant said ‘you may kiss the bride’, there was a huge cheer.

“We had people congratulating us from every direction. One guy even told us he’d time lapsed it and could email it to us, so even though we eloped, we felt far from alone.”

The celebrant put a positive spin on the wet weather.

“She said a wet knot is much more difficult to untie. I thought it was so beautiful and I totally forgot about the rain.

“Even when we ventured outside to get photos, we didn’t care that it was freezing and rainy. We just enjoyed the whole experience.”

With the photos finished, Kym and Nate caught an Uber back to their Manhattan hotel and discussed the “reception”.

“We thought it was fitting we should have pizza, not just any New York pizza, but Domino’s, because that’s where it all started and it’s our life.”
