Move for a breakaway state also gains ground

“I am particularly proud to be a Cairns-ite,” Cr Manning said.

“We love our environment, and it both defines and unifies us. It is the ‘architecture of the gods’ and we have to treat it as such, with respect.”

The mayor’s musings fit perfectly with the next slice of data — readers told us the best thing about life in the Far North was the natural environment (40 per cent).

Cr Manning added the “upbringing you can offer your family” as another sure-fire winner.

“I grew up with paradise as my backyard,” he said.

“Clean and flowing water ways, mangoes, climbing trees, playing team sport.

“Nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing today’s kids able to enjoy those same pursuits.”

Conversely, the high cost of living (28 per cent) and the heat or humidity (24 per cent) emerged as the biggest bugbears for locals.

“The other major disadvantage to living in Tropical North Queensland, is that southern relatives love coming to visit,” Cr Manning said.

The feedback is an invaluable resource for the Cairns Post and we will use the results to campaign with every last thing Far Northerners have told us they want.

We cannot change the weather, but we will battle for tirelessly for what our readers tell us is worth fighting for. Don’t miss Monday’s for more breakdowns of the survey results.
