WHAT WILL YOU WEAR?

ANYONE still searching for the perfect Cairns Cup outfit needs to look no further than sleeved burgundy dresses and felt fascinators.

The winterwear is still perfectly acceptable for next Saturday’s event, which is the last winter race on the Cairns calendar.

Sonlia owner Liana Hastie said trends from last year’s winter races had carried through the last 12 months.

“There are a lot of full sleeves, elbow-length sleeves and cap sleeves that can be worn to the Cairns Cup,” she said.

“There will be a lot of tailored looks and a lot of off-theshoulder sleeves.”

She said ladies were also already putting together their outfits for the Cairns Amateurs.

“That’s the spring carnival, so there are a lot of lavenders, ice blues, and lots of pastels,” Ms Hastie said.

“We’ve had a lot of very feminine florals and very dainty prints. There have also been very unique, very beautiful laces.”

Peggy’s Creations owner and designer Peggy Walker said personality came above everything when she was designing millinery for the Cairns Amateurs.

“If somebody wants something made they should come in two weeks before the event, at least,” she said.

“I like to meet people faceto-face, so I can see their personality, and whether they’re tall, or short, or confident, or shy, so I can make something special for them. It all has to tie together,” she said.

She said boater hats, halos, and crowns were on trend this year thanks to Meghan Markle’s influence on fashion.

“The royal family has put millinery back in the limelight,” she said.

“Because they’ve seen them so much in the past year, people are finding hats to be a more practical addition to their outfits for the races and other special occasions.”

Both women said the most important thing was to feel confident and comfortable.

“Just pick something you’re comfortable in, and make sure you wear comfortable shoes,” Ms Hastie said.

“And take it from someone who has broken their shoes twice at the races – always have a backup pair in the car.”
