Get some skin in the game

-

Katelynn Thorley is passionate about skin and helping others and so was naturally drawn to the beauty therapy industry.

EDUCATION

A beauty therapy qualification was needed as well as completing a number of prerequisite courses in laser safety and clinical health. It is also necessary to obtain a licence from Queensland Radiation which requires more than 100 hours of supervised training. The Laser Training Institute offers nationally accredited government courses in vocational graduate certificate in IPL and laser hair reduction, or a diploma or certificate IV in beauty therapy.

MORE TRAINING

Once hired Ms Thorley said she’s had training with Candela (the laser manufacturers), which she said was a very intense process. There were also opportunities to progress to a second in charge or clinic manager. As Laser Clinics Australia is a national franchise there was also the opportunity to transfer within clinics. Next year Ms Thorley will start a Bachelor of Nursing. Once qualified she will be able to become a cosmetic injector.

PAY SCALE

The Hair and Beauty Industry Award 2010 lists a weekly wage range between $789.90 for a level one hair and beauty employee to $909.70 for a level six hair and beauty employee, although the pay scale would vary.

The Laser Training Institute offers plenty of information on courses for those interested in the industry. Phone 1300 970 609 or visit lasertraininginstitute.com.au to access more details.
