WHAT INGREDIENTS GO INTO A SATISFYING CAREER CHOICE

-

EDUCATION

TAFE cooking courses can give aspiring bakers the practical skills and knowledge needed to become a chef, sous chef, baker or patisserie cook. Certificates are available in kitchen operations, commercial cookery, patisserie or retail baking.

In Australia, it takes four years to complete training and make the transition from apprentice to chef. Much of the learning for careers in the kitchen is done on the job via apprenticeships.

MORE TRAINING

Some pastry chefs choose to undergo further studies in the field either in Australia or abroad where much of the craft originated.

Those looking to own their own restaurant, cooking school or catering company may study further for a business qualification.

Some cooks and chefs decide to complete teaching qualifications and find employment in schools or vocational education institutions.

PAY SCALE

A pastry chef or baker earns an average of about $47,000 per annum but could increase if the baker is also the owner. Income will vary depending on experience. Apprentices typically earn about $20-25 per hour.

WHO TO CONTACT

Those seeking more information on a baking career stop by a local patisserie or check out the Australian Culinary Federation’s website at austculinary.com.au. It also helps to be a cook at home.
