EDUCATION
The discipline of microbiology involves the use of laboratory techniques to diagnose infectious diseases, recommend antibiotic therapy and to advise, correlate, co-ordinate and educate clinicians regarding aspects of the pathogenesis, epidemiology, prevention and management of infection. Clinical microbiologists work in diagnostic medical /pathology laboratories. A minimum of a science degree is required for this job.
MORE TRAINING
Pathologists are specialist medical practitioners who study the cause of disease and the ways in which diseases affect our bodies by examining changes in the tissues and in blood and other body fluids. Some of these changes show the potential to develop a disease, while others show its presence, cause or severity or monitor its progress or the effects of treatment. There are plenty of pathways for specialisation in this field.
PAYSCALE
The average salary for a microbiologist is $75,000 per year in Australia. This salary can increase with levels of expertise and may depend on the employer and whether they are a private or public entity.
WHO TO CONTACT
Start talking to high school science teachers, school counsellors, or staff in the science faculty of your local university. A tertiary degree must be completed to become a microbiologist.
