Geitz looks back on a ‘phenomenal time’

- GREG DAVIS

LAURA Geitz, 30, knew it was time to retire as she looked across the netball court and was no longer one of the tallest players doing battle.

But Geitz walks away from the game that made her a household name as an absolute giant of netball.

She has hung up the GK bib after a glittering career that in- cluded three grand final wins as Queensland Firebirds captain along with World Cup glory and Commonwealth Games gold with the Diamonds.

She returned to netball after missing the 2017 season after the birth of her son, to play in the Commonwealth Games and have a last fling in the Suncorp Super Netball competition.

The Diamonds and Firebirds fell short of a fairytale finish for Geitz who last graced a court in Queensland’s elimination final loss to the Sunshine Coast on August 12 at Boondall – where she is lauded in bronze with a statue at the front steps. But Geitz has no regrets. “It’s been a phenomenal time. I’ve loved absolutely every second of wearing the purple uniform and being part of a family … it means the absolute world to me,” Geitz said.

“It’s been wonderful but all good things have to come to an end. I’m excited to say I’ve closed the chapter on my netballing life and I’m very excited for the next chapter and what lies ahead.

“I most definitely knew towards the back end of this season … that it’s time for me to hang up the bib.”
