Coghlan brings fresh intent to hopeful Tigers

- JORDAN GERRANS

GLEN Coghlan hopes to bring stability and positivity to Watsons Oval after taking over as North Cairns’ senior coach for 2019.

The Tigers have gone through a number of coaches in the last 12 months.

Iaon Drake held the pos- ition at the start of this year, before he was replaced by playing-coach Tait Giffard and eventually Nemani Valucava was installed, before he pulled out last month.

Now, former Centrals Trinity Beach coach Coghlan, takes over.

North Cairns claimed the wooden spoon last season and Coghlan, who played 29 senior AFL games with St Kilda in the 1990s before relocating to the Far North, says the only way is up.

“I am pretty excited about the job and the challenges that are ahead, for myself, the players and the club,” Coghlan said.

“Initially it will be about providing some stability and structure. They have had a hard time the last couple of years but it is about getting some stability and the wheel will start turning from there.

“It is about being positive around the playing group and hopefully adding a few others.”

Coghlan says he has been busy recruiting a new batch of Tigers for 2019 and beyond.

Experienced Tigers Chris Novy and Tom Clough have been linked with a move across town to Manunda and Coghlan says the potential movement of the talented duo is an “ongoing process”.

The Tigers won just two of their 18 games in 2018, with a percentage of just 34.2 to finish last on the premiership ladder.
