Nervous wait for OPs over

- ALICIA NALLY alicia.nally@news.com.au

YEARS of hard work, tears and all nighters will be reduced to a number this morning as thousands of Far North school leavers log on to received their tertiary entrance scores.

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority has published final Year 12 results and Overall Position scores in student learning accounts on the Student Connect website.

One of those who will eagerly check the results is Cairns State High School graduate Will Tucker, who has been told he should get a one, the top score. His results should guarantee a spot in medicine at James Cook University in Townsville or at a NSW university.

“I’ll be excited and celebrate with the family,” Mr Tucker said. “I don’t really know what kind of medicine I’ll do exactly, they’re all really interesting. I’ll work it out in the future.”

Mr Tucker said anyone could achieve their goals, “it just comes down to discipline and time management, hard work and conscientiousness”.

JCU psychology senior lecturer Dr Anne Swinbourne said whatever the result, it was important for school leavers to remember Year 12 results won’t define your future.

“If you don’t achieve the OP you hoped for, it’s OK to feel sad or disappointed, but don’t panic. Talk with people you trust and take advantage of the … support that’s out there. You can still pursue your dream career, you just might have to take a slightly different path to get there,” she said.
