Kowais keen to take vigoro blitz all the way

- ROWAN SPARKES

KOWAIS will be looking to assert themselves as the very best team of the 2018 Cairns Vigoro Association senior competition when they take on Mighty Ducks in today’s grand final at Walker Road Sporting Precinct, Edmonton.

Kowais, led by Danella Cook, finished the regular season on top of the ladder with a commanding 29-point buffer between them and secondplaced Pjays, but it will count for very little unless they can back up their dominant season with a championship.

On the other hand, Mighty Ducks, led by Sara Millard, will be hoping to build on the momentum they gained in last weekend’s semi-final against Jays.

With just five minutes left in the match, Ducks were required to dismiss the Jays’ final three batters, while the Jays needed 15 runs to secure a win and a spot in the big dance.

Cairns Vigoro Association president Jeanene Lynam said she expected another tight contest today.

“Even though it’s a relatively small competition, the play is of a really high standard,” she said.

“There are some exceptionally talented players that participate in the competition.”

Speaking of the Far North’s imminent weather, she said it would take an almighty downpour to dampen the ladies’ spirits.

“It’s all going ahead at this stage,” she said yesterday afternoon.

“We’ll make a decision tomorrow if we need to.”

Lynam said the public was encouraged to get down and watch the spectacle of vigoro, ahead of Cairns hosting the Queensland senior state vigoro titles next month, from January 26-28.

Local junior representative teams will travel to Fassifern for their state titles, to be held from January 11-13.
