Kelly’s done well but he could do with a hand

-

WITH just five games remaining for Cairns this season, and the Snakes eliminated from post-season play, I thought it might be time to look at how NBL 2019-20 could shape up.

Mike Kelly’s ability to hold the team together has been admirable and the play of Melo Trimble has been worth the price of admission alone.

But to be blunt this season has been a write off for the Taipans, and the reset button will again need to be punched.

Defensively the team is still searching for an identity, and no Australian players have consistently put their hands up for increased minutes.

No coach plays his imported players more than Kelly, but I don’t blame him for that. Trimble will command a much higher salary next season, and Devon Hall will be moved on.

DJ Newbill could be worth another look as a hard working third import.

Nate Jawai has shown he can still be a force inside, if fed the ball often and early.

Rob Loe has copped a lot of heat, but I think over the past month has shown enough to warrant another year as a back up, who can cover starter minutes at times.

Lucas Walker’s 16 points and nine rebounds last week was a nice reminder of what he’s capable of and he must get through a full preseason if he’s to be brought back.

Alex Loughton will no doubt retire, and his jersey should go in the rafters in game one next season.

Two or three young college stars will also give the fans something to cheer about if the season starts to slide.

Illawarra have leant on that aspect a few times this season.

I’m a big Kelly fan, and the great Geordie McLeod once told me you don’t see a person’s true character when the team is up 20, but when they’re down 20.

Kelly has conducted himself in a very positive and professional manner.

I would, however, seek to get him a sideline boost.

Someone who has sat in the big chair, and knows the pressures of being an NBL head coach. I’d also retain current assistant coach Jamie O’Loughlin, as he’s is a very good skills coach and tireless worker. It’s never easy to put your hand up and say “we got it wrong” but all that matters now is the path forward.

Feelings and emotions get hurt in this business, but it’s an industry where you laugh now and cry later, as next season approaches.
