‘Chopsticks’ set for big bout

- ROWAN SPARKES MUAY THAI

FEW people would be willing to step in the ring with Matthew Smith.

The Nukzu Muay Thai fighter will headline tonight’s Path to Elite event at the Cairns Colonial Club, taking on South Australian Thomas ‘The Tank Engine’ Wilkins.

The man they call “Chopsticks”, a nickname he earned through a love of traditional Thai cuisine, said he had been training hard in the lead-up.

“I’ve been putting in a lot of work and trying some different things,” he said.

“Hopefully they’ll be raising my hand after it all.”

Cairns fighters Brian Ross and Bernard Temu will face off in the night’s semi-main event and have promised to give the crowd a show.

“It’s going to be a tough fight – he (Temu) has got hands of steel,” Ross said.

“He’ll be going for a knockout for sure and I’ll be reciprocating.”

In the women’s feature bouts, Cairns fighters Rion Boney and Jodie Falstrom will take on Taylah Barnes (Innisfail) and Brooke McLeod (Townsville), respectively.

With 10 fights on the card, Path to Elite will be a night full of action and entertainment.

Hosted by Explosive Fight Promotions, the Cairns fight night provides a pathway for local Thai boxers to gain experience before stepping up the big stage and bright lights of the Elite Fight Series.

Doors for tonight’s ticketed event open at 6pm.
