That’s what a legend looks like

- WITH CAMERON TRAGARDH

PLAYERS and coaches come and go. But, legends never die. This is certainly the case for retiring Cairns Taipans captain Alex Loughton.

The great number 40 for the Cairns Taipans will bounce a ball and give his last ever fist pumps at the Cairns Convention Centre this afternoon.

But, there is absolutely no doubt that his passion and energy will forever live on in the Far North Queensland NBL club. He was a hell of a roommate on the road during my time with him at the club and his influence on young and new players to Cairns was instrumental to any success the club has had over his nine seasons.

Alex could always sense a teammate who was struggling, and was happy to play the “good cop” role, when the coaching staff had taken the other approach towards them.

To sum it all up he was a great mate to anyone who donned the orange across his career.

He featured in 300 games and hit countless big shots.

Alex gave his heart and soul to the city of Cairns.

He was often willing teams with far less talent to underdog victories.

He’s a great family man, and everything you could want in a club legend.

I expect his jersey to go into the rafter as soon as possible. Congratulations great man.

It’s been a hell of a ride.
