Wet weather rules out grade semis today

- ROWAN SPARKES CRICKET FAR NORTH

THE Cricket Far North deciding rounds have been bowled a jaffa by the weather gods.

Today’s scheduled semifinal matches for first, second and third grade clubs were officially called off yesterday afternoon.

Cricket Far North president Peter Huey said the matches would not be able to go ahead due to lack of preparation on the wickets because of recent rain.

He said teams that finished in first and second place at the end of the regular season would progress through to a grand final tomorrow, weather pending.

In third grade, Mareeba and Norths will advance; in second grade, Norths and Cassowary Coast will go through; while in first grade, Mulgrave and Norths will advance, but will play out a three-game series to determine who takes this year’s spoils.

In the event that tomorrow’s games are washed out, teams that finished the regular season in first for second and third grades will be crowned champions.

In this case, Mareeba would be the 2018-19 Cricket Far North third grade champions, while Norths would take home the second grade trophy.

First grade sides Mulgrave and Norths will still have two games to get a result next weekend.

The weather-affected schedule means last year’s champions Atherton are out of the race.

The club’s vice president, Anthony Potts, said there was nothing they could do about it.

“It happens every year,” he said.

“We thought we wouldn’t be playing since Tuesday.

“The boys will be disappointed but they’ve known all along – finish on top, otherwise it makes it hard.” editorial@cairnspost.com.au facebook.com/TheCairnsPost www.cairnspost.com.au twitter.com/TheCairnsPost
