FIGHTING FIT

QUEEN OF HEALTH MICHELLE BRIDGES INSIDE OUR SPECIAL CLUB’S EVENT

- ALICIA NALLY AND JACK LAWRIE

WITH her boundless energy, gift of the gab and some home truths, celebrity fitness guru Michelle Bridges left the Cairns business community with some unforgettable life lessons at the latest Cairns Club networking event at the Reef Hotel Casino last night.

The 48-year-old self-made millionaire and Dancing With the Stars contestant has a young son, Axel, with partner Steve “Commando” Willis and has become a household name in Australia after starring as a trainer on The Biggest Loser.

Ms Bridges said many of the barriers people brought up when talking about starting a fitness journey were often ones they’d put up themselves.

“So many people will start with ‘I don’t know what to do’, but when I start giving them advice on what to do, they keep on coming up with reasons why (they can’t),” Ms Bridges said.

“There’ll be a myriad of reasons: it’s too hot, it’s too cold, I don’t have the money, I’m too big, too small, not strong enough.

“But where there’s a will there’s a way, and one of the best things you can do is get support from people – friends, kids, neighbours, a doctor, or a trainer.”

Ms Bridges said the Cairns community was blessed to have an ideal environment for getting fit.

“Of course it’s going to get steamy and hot during the summer, but you’ve got no winter,” she said.

“I know I’m going to offend someone by saying that, but please, it doesn’t get cold here.”

Cairns Post sales manager Stephanie Campbell said Ms Bridges’ talk had a great impact on the audience.

“She’s popular, motivational and vibrant, willing to give it a go,” she said.

“I think it’s paramount in any area that people have something to aim and aspire towards and if they can be inspired by her talk, that’s a great result.”

The Cairns Post’s Cairns Club gathering showed there was plenty of support for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation’s goal of raising $253,000 to establish an endoscopy service and purchasing a new surgical microscope for Cairns Hospital.

The service will bring the hospital to a tertiary level facility and keep hundreds of local patients in Cairns for diagnosis and treatment of cancers and other illness.

Guests also lined up to purchase a copy of Ms Bridges’ new recipe book, Keeping It Off, and have it signed by the fitness star.
