Croc in Smiths Creek

- PETER CARRUTHERS peter.carruthers@news.com.au

A SMALL crocodile has reared its head from the waters of a creek behind the Parramatta State School for the second time in as many months.

Lauren Thirlwell snapped photographs of the croc on Thursday in Smiths Creek while riding down a bike path with her younger brother.

“Every time we go past it’s like ‘it would be so funny if we saw a crocodile’ and we went past and there was actually a crocodile there,” she said.

Department of Environment and Science officers estimated the estuarine croc to be 1m long after viewing photos and confirmed the sighting late yesterday after not initially being aware of the animal’s presence.

“Recent crocodile sighting warning signs have been installed and wildlife officers continue to monitor the area. A site patrol has been arranged for Monday,” a DES spokeswoman said.

Ms Thirlwell was relieved to hear the croc had been targeted for removal.

“Especially since it’s next to a primary school and behind houses,” she said.

DES wouldn’t speculate on the possibility the croc is the same animal seen in the area on June 10.

“Under the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan, Smiths Creek is within Zone B (active removal zone). This means that any crocodile confirmed to be present is automatically targeted for removal,” she said.

“The crocodile sighting report has been passed on to DES’s contractors who are seeking to capture and remove the animal.”

The DES spokeswoman said it was important for residents to make formal reports of crocs to the department rather than post photos to social media.

“Members of the public are encouraged to report crocodile sightings as soon as possible, by calling 1300 130 372. DES investigates all reports it receives,” she said.

“The Cairns region is known croc country and people in the area are reminded to always be crocwise.”

Crocodiles that pose a threat to human safety are targeted for removal under the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan.

Last year wildlife officers were on the hunt for two 3m saltwater crocs in Smiths Creek at Parramatta Park.
