Anti-mine protesters picket engineering offices
JACK LAWRIE ANTI-ADANI activists yesterday protested outside engineering multinational GHD’s Cairns office in the latest in a week of demonstrations across the country.
The StopAdani group is taking the company to task over what it alleges is involvement with the Adani mine project, in a National Week of Action.
StopAdani Cairns member John Pratt said the group was calling for GHD to cancel its rumoured contract to do the engineering design for the Carmichael mine project.
“Already 50 contractors, including construction giant Downer, have ruled out working with Adani,” he said.
“These contractors align with the two thirds of Australians who are opposed to Adani’s coal mine and want to see it stopped. We will maintain pressure on GHD until the company lives up to its own principles, and cancels its contract with Adani.”
Mr Pratt said GHD is a signatory to the UN Global Compact for Sustainable Development, which includes clean energy and climate action among its goals.
“We are asking them to cancel their contract with Adani that even the major banks and finance companies are not willing to fund,” he said. “GHD need to be global leaders and take a stand against corporate greed and climate destruction.”
GHD’s website contains no references to Adani, and the company has not released a statement on the matter.
StopAdani Cairns will be involved in a demonstration at the Cairns Convention Centre to coincide with the Coalition of Australian Government meeting on August 9.
