Pride keen to retain Torpy duo

- ROWAN SPARKES

NORTHERN Pride coach Ty Williams is confident soughtafter siblings Brayden and Cameron Torpy will remain at the club next season.

Williams said keeping the brothers, who joined the Pride during the 2019 pre-season, at Barlow Park for another year was “high on the list”.

He said the halfback and prop duo would generate “plenty of interest” from other clubs, but was hoping they’d repay the club’s faith and stay on for the 2020 campaign.

However, with both players expressing a desire to take their footy to the next level, the Pride could have to contend with promises of train-andtrial contracts and other “dangling carrots” from rival clubs.

But Williams is confident in the Pride’s offerings.

“I can’t control what other clubs do,” he said.

“We’ve just got to worry about what we can best put forward and the opportunities we can give our guys. We’re very good at exposing guys to a very high level of footy. If they’re actually going to go away and get an opportunity to play at an NRL club and get in a system, we have no dramas with that, the biggest thing is when the carrot gets dangled and they don’t go to an NRL club, or they might do six weeks but they don’t end up there.

“We want to be clear on what we want to be doing and making sure we have the right guys in place for where we want to be heading.

“We know we’re an opportunity club moving forward and that’s something we need to focus on.”

The Pride have the weekend off with a bye.
