Leader’s legacy lives on in city

-

“His clientele and practice reflected the key economic drivers of the region: Property development, tourism, commercial fishing and agriculture.

“John had a genuine care for his clients and a commitment to ethical and collegiate practice. Forever calm and constructive, no matter the challenges he faced.

“John had a great vision for Cairns and the region. His expertise and experience saw him engaged in most of the major projects in the region.

“He became a catalyst for positive change and helped to shape a better future for Cairns. Throughout it all, he saw himself both as a commercial lawyer and community activist. He worked to serve not only the interests of his clients, but of the community more broadly,” Mr McGrath said.

His commitment to sustainable economic development in the region included senior roles with the Cairns Port Authority (now Ports North), Northern Development Industry Association, Cairns Region Economic Development Corporation and the Regional Tourism Council.

“John’s legacy as a business and community leader is unsurpassed. John was an inspiration, friend and mentor to many, but above all, he was devoted to his family.

“The partners and staff of Miller Harris Lawyers extend their sincere condolences to Selwyn, Matthew, Tony, Amanda and their extended families,” Mr McGrath said.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning paid tribute to Mr Harris, a “great mate”, leader and the man who saved Cairns Taipans when they were about to fold.

Mr Harris was port authority deputy chairman and Mr Manning chief executive when they agreed to a one-off, lifesaving payment to the Taipans.

“John was the driver of it. If it hadn’t been made, Cairns would be the poorer and nobody knew about that except he and I,” Mr Manning said.

“He was a guy who had the best interests of Cairns at heart every minute of the day.”
