Brewers seek excise freeze for ailing industry

- TOBY VUE

CAIRNS brewers and venues have joined a national call for the next biannual increase in beer tax to be frozen during the coronavirus pandemic.

Brewers Association of Australia CEO Brett Heffernan said the latest increase in tax set for August 3 “comes at a time when publicans and patrons can least afford it as the hospitality industry battles with the devastating economic impacts of COVID-19”.

Cameron McPherson, founder of Barrier Reef Brewing Co in Cairns, said he understood the need for excise, but it would be “more equitable if a sliding scale was used for smaller producers”.

“That is, the more beer you produce the more excise you pay – up to the maximum,” he said.

Macalister Brewing founder Rob Callin said the pandemic has had “a huge financial hit”.

“Applying further tax increases on drinkers is not going to help our industry recover or make it affordable for people to get back to normal,” he said.

“Aussies love a beer, it’s about time they got a fair go and a fair price.”

Edge Hill Memorial Bowls Club manager Lawrence Green agreed.

“Every little increase can be felt, especially at a time like this,” he said.
