THE charity at the heart of an ethics investigation targeting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid members of his family for speaking engagements, Canadian media reported.

WE Charity paid Margaret Trudeau, the prime minister’s mother, $250,000 for speeches at 28 events between 2016 and 2020, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

The revelation seemed “to contradict WE Charity’s earlier claim that it had never paid an honorarium to Margaret Trudeau,” the public broadcaster said in a report on its website.

PARK Won-soon, the powerful and outspoken mayor of Seoul and a potential South Korean presidential candidate, was found dead on Friday after a suspected suicide. He was 64.

Mr Park’s body was found on a mountain north of the city, police said, after his family had reported him missing, sparking a frantic $32,000 for his participation in eight events, the CBC reported.

It also said the prime minister’s office had confirmed that his wife Sophie “received $1500” for participating in a WE event in 2012, before Trudeau took over the leadership of the Liberal Party.

Canada’s ethics watchdog said has launched an investigation into the prime minister, after a controversial contract to manage a major government program was awarded to WE Charity in June.

The Conservative opposition blasted Trudeau for the “scandalous” revelations. search by hundreds of officers.

Police said no suicide note was found, but Yonhap news agency reported that he was “presumed to have taken his own life”.

A former Seoul City employee had filed a police complaint against him, allegedly involving sexual harassment. Mr Park’s daughter contacted police on Thursday, saying her father had been unreachable. He left a message that sounded like “last words” and his phone had been turned off, she said.

A leading figure in the country’s ruling Democratic party, Mr Park was a favoured candidate to succeed President Moon Jae-in. He did not deny his presidential ambitions in an interview earlier this year.
