Ruthless Cutters demolish the Tigers

- JORDAN GERRANS

NORTH and south are at the opposite ends of a compass.

And, once the 2020 AFL Cairns home-and-away season is complete, expect that to be the case on the ladder.

Only in this scenario, it will be the opposite — South Cairns Cutters near the very top, and North Cairns Tigers down the other end.

Last year’s beaten grand finalist flexed their muscles yesterday afternoon in the rare

Friday afternoon timeslot, taking care of the rebuilding Tigers under new coach Ronnie Burns with ease.

The new shortened quarters this year were a godsend for North as they went down 31. 17 (203) to 1.3 (9), in a onesided affair.

Cutters youngster Parlyane Na’Awi could be facing a spell on the sidelines after being yellow-carded and put on report in the opening term.

Na’Awi caught Thuraka Sammons with a late bump and knocked him out right in front of the Tigers’ bench. Sammons did not return to the game.

Former Pyramid Power goalsneak Henry Mareko was thrown around the ground for Cutters, starting down back before kicking a couple of clever snaps in the second term when put forward, one from either pocket.

South Cairns youngster Karl Petri put in an encouraging effort, marking strongly on a couple of occasions.

The scoreline was not attractive for the hosts but Fitzroy Greenwool added some dash to their side while Craig Waldon and Dillon Rogers never stopped trying.

North kicked the first goal of the game but it was an avalanche after that.

Cutters coach John Tootell said he was happy to start the new campaign 2-0.

South Cairns retained the Bill Reed Memorial Shield, in the second year it has been played for.
