CITY NETS TRIPLE SUPER NETBALL FIXTURE TREAT

Far North set to host three Super Netball games

- ROWAN SPARKES

FAR North Queensland will be home to the Suncorp Super Netball competition’s annual Indigenous Round, with three matches to be played over two days in Cairns this month.

The Cairns pop-up arena, in the old Bunnings Warehouse site on Spence St, will host a Super Netball double-header on Saturday, September 19, with the West Coast Fever taking on the Giants and the Adelaide Thunderbirds facing the NSW Swifts.

On Sunday, September 20, our own Queensland Firebirds will take on the ladder-leading Melbourne Vixens at the temporary venue.

The round will be launched in Townsville earlier that week, with the Collingwood Magpies to take on the Sunshine Coast Lightning on Wednesday, September 16.

Suncorp Super Netball CEO Chris Symington said the league was thrilled to be taking matches to regional Queensland venues, especially during Indigenous Round.

“We know there are many Suncorp Super Netball fans throughout north Queensland who may never have had the opportunity to attend a live match,” he said.

“These fans will now not only be able to enjoy the live action that Suncorp Super Netball brings, but also be part of a unique celebration of Indigenous Round that sees all our teams journey to one region.”

All teams will wear dresses and play with a ball designed by Indigenous artists, with cultural ceremonies to also take place throughout the round. Member for Cairns Michael Healy said the Far North would benefit from a multimillion-dollar month, with the Suncorp Super Netball, AFL, Targa Rally and the iconic Cairns Ironman all taking place in September.

“When we first brought the Super Netball season to Queensland, I lobbied hard to ensure Cairns got a piece of the action because I know how lucrative these games are,” he said.

“If you’re a netball fan, Cairns is the place to be in September.

“After securing at least one game for Cairns, we’ve now locked in the entire Indigenous Round to be held in North Queensland.

“Our local tourism and events industry has been devastated by the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 but because Queenslanders have done such a great job following the health advice, we are able to secure major events for Cairns as we focus on the economic recovery.”
