Repeat offender jailed
Numerous offences land Cairns man four-year sentence
A CAIRNS man who made a series of street-level methamphetamine deals among other offending while on a suspended sentence has been handed a four-year prison term.
Jason Andrew Muller, 43, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of supplying dangerous drugs in the Cairns District Court on Thursday.
The court heard Muller had made a series of drug supplies to his friends “as a favour” in the hope they would supply him when they had them.
The deals ranged in quantity from .1g of methamphetamine to .75g, and on two occasions he also supplied cannabis.
Muller’s offending spanned a number of months in late 2019 and 2020 and also involved failures to appear in court, unlawful use of motor vehicles, driving while disqualified, and breaches of bail.
Judge William Everson said that on September 25, 2020 in Caboolture, Muller was identified by police as driving a stolen vehicle. Muller drove at police cars before stopping and running away, eventually being capsicum sprayed and arrested, the court heard.
“In my view, the offending before the court … involves offending in numerous different contexts in numerous settings of a recidivist nature,” Judge Everson said. “It was flagrant, it was brazen. I accept that you were in the grip of an addiction to methamphetamine, however it cannot be said that this offending before me is trivial.”
Defence barrister Tim Grau told the court his client’s offending was as a result of a “life-changing event” which had seen Muller descend into a “very self-destructive era”.
Judge Everson activated Muller’s suspended sentence he had received in Cairns in March 2019 and ordered he serve a total of four years’ imprisonment, with a parole eligibility date of January 20, 2022, taking into account 350 days had already been served in custody.
