Author discusses her harrowing tale
CAIRNS author Angela Bonomi will next week discuss her newly-released book, which details her escape from the cycle of domestic violence, as part of Australian Reading Hour.
The Australian Reading Hour is an initiative that encourages both adults and children to embrace the benefits of reading for one hour.
It aims to encourage people to either rediscover their love of reading or introduce them to the joys of storytelling and learning.
This year the event aims to celebrate stories that matter, such as that told by Ms Bonomi in her book, Angel’s Fire Ignites.
This confronting book, details one woman’s 10-year experience of being trapped in the cycle of domestic violence, and how she eventually broke free of the abuse and moved forward with her life.
“What began as a romantic encounter, ended with her running for her life,” a synopsis of her book read.
“If she did not run far enough away, one of these days, she was sure he would kill her.
“When you are trapped in an unsafe relationship, it is difficult to get out. But with faith, courage and taking steps in the right direction, you can break the cycle of abuse and be free to live your truth.”
Ms Bonomi talks about her 10-year struggle for freedom openly and with honesty, sharing the lessons she has learnt on reflection.
Through her writing, she aspires to help other victims of abuse to take positive steps towards a happier life. She offers insight to anyone in or out of a toxic relationship, to help them see and act on the red flags sooner and not become dangerously entangled.
Conversations in the Library with Ms Bonomi is on Tuesday from 10.30am to 11.30am at Smithfield Library.
Each of Cairns Libraries’ eight branches will celebrate Australian Reading Hour on Tuesday, September 14 with special reading nooks established to encourage adults and children to read throughout the day, as well as helpful displays.
For children, a special Story Dog’s reading session will be held at Manunda Library from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.
