1876 STAN ROWLEY Australian athlete

Sprinter Rowley was born in Young, NSW. He won four medals at the 1900 Olympics in Paris. Rowley collected bronze medals in the 60m, 110m and 200m. He won gold as part of a mixed British Empire team in the 5000m team race.

1885 D.H. LAWRENCE English writer

David Herbert Lawrence was the fourth child of a miner and a lace factory worker. His

1917 FERDINAND MARCOS Philippine­s President

Marcos served as the 10th president of the Philippine­s from 1965 to 1986. He ruled as a dictator under martial law from 1972 until 1981, and retained most of his powers until he was deposed in 1986. He fled to Hawaii.

1934 NORMA CROKER Australian athlete

Croker was the first Queensland­er to win an Olympic gold medal. She placed fourth in the 200m at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, and collected gold with Shirley Strickland, Fleur Mellor and Betty Cuthbert in the 4x100m relay.

1945 FRANZ BECKENBAUE­R German footballer

Beckenbaue­r was born in postwar Munich and carved out a football career that earned him the nickname Der Kaiser (The Emperor). He was twice named European Footballer of the Year and competed in three FIFA World Cups as a player. He later managed the German team.

1965 BASHAR AL-ASSAD President of Syria

Al-Assad became the president of Syria in 2000, and remains in the role despite repeated attempts to remove him. He was implicated in war crimes after a savage crackdown on protesters in 2011, but denies the accusation­s.

1967 HARRY CONNICK JR

American singer Connick Jr was born and raised in new Orleans. He started playing the keyboard when he was three, and has had seven US Top 20 albums.
