1494 SULEIMAN Ottoman Sultan

Commonly known as Suleiman the Magnificen­t, he was the 10th and longestser­ving Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He ruled from 1520 until his death in 1566. Under his administra­tion, the Ottoman caliphate ruled over at least 25 million people.

1861 JAMES NAISMITH Canadian-American physical educator

Naismith is best known as the inventor of the game of basketball. After moving to the US, he wrote the original basketball rule book. The first game of Basket Ball was played in 1891.

1946 SALLY FIELD American actor

Field began her career on television, starring in the comedies Gidget and The Flying Nun. She earned critical acclaim for the 1976 television film Sybil. Her film work garnered two Best Actress Academy Awards for Norma Rae and Places in the Heart.

1946 GEORGE YOUNG Australian musician

Young was born in Scotland but moved to Australia with his family in 1963. He was a founding member of the bands the Easybeats and Flash and the Pan. His younger brothers Malcolm and Angus were both members of the band AC/DC.

1956 GRAEME WOOD Australian cricketer

Wood played in 59 Test matches and 83 ODIs for Australia. He scored nine Test centuries, which stood as a record for a West Australian player until it was surpassed by Justin Langer. Wood scored a total of 3374 runs in Test matches.

1970 ETHAN HAWKE American actor

Hawke made his film debut in the 1985 science fiction film Explorers before his breakthrou­gh performanc­e in the 1989 drama Dead Poets Society. His other film credits includes Reality Bites. He has been nominated for four Academy Awards.

1988 EMMA STONE American actor

Stone began her career as a child on stage, then TV and films. Her role in the romantic musical La La Land earned her an Academy Award, a BAFTA a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe.
