CRICKET Far North’s “rattled” representative teams have travelled to Mackay and will honour one of the most influential figures in the cricket community, vowing to “do it for Steve” at the North Queensland Zone Championships.
The cricket community was left reeling by the shock drowning of well-respected coach, loving husband and father Steve Argoon.
On Thursday, Mackay Police confirmed the body of 63-year-old Argoon was pulled from Kinchant Dam after he fell overboard on Tuesday afternoon.
He was deeply passionate about his cricket, playing key roles at Mulgrave Combined Cricket Association over the years, as well as coaching at representative level, primarily with the under-21s.
Queensland Cricket president Kev Maher said the Far North teams travelled to Mackay’s Harrup Park with heavy hearts, but would do their best to honour Argoon.
“We’ll do it for Steve,” Maher said.
“Everyone’s still heading down. We’ll do our best to get around the players, but it’s rattled everyone. I feel terribly sad for the family.”
The under-21s will face Mackay-Whitsunday on Saturday and Central Queensland on Sunday in rounds 3 and 4 of the North Queensland Zone Championships at Harrup Park, Mackay.
And they will boast a talented line-up in doing so.
Mulgrave’s Max DaviesGriffith is coming off an outstanding weekend in which he took 4-14 in 10 overs, while Aiden Beach has become one of CFN’s premier bowlers after a standout Barrier Reef Big Bash campaign.
Barron duo Ben McCartney and Harry Gardner are also top performers at first grade level.
The open men’s team, which lost its opening two games against North Queensland, will also face MackayWhitsunday and CQ.
It will be an important series of fixtures for Far North with captain Dan Parnell set to call time on rep cricket, leaving coach Steve Kerwitz planning for the future.
“He’s going to retire from rep after this trip, so we’ll be looking for a new opening bat, but there’s definitely some opportunities,” Kerwitz said.
“(Rhys) Camilleri can open the batting, might give him an opportunity, might even be Paul Nasser, just get him in to just bat, however long it takes you, it could be Matty Wilkins, it could be the young buck, he might just jump on board and take it.
“We’ll try a few little things, “I’m going to let Danny have a bit of a free rein this week, if he wants to bat somewhere different, he can bat somewhere different.”
Northern Queensland’s women’s team, which features the best of FNQ and Townsville cricketers, will play CQ in three Twenty20 fixtures.
