Four-storey Edge Hill unit plan

- BRONWYN FARR

TWO tired old homes at Edge Hill could make way for a fourstorey unit development if Cairns Regional Council approves the development application.

A total of 22 units are proposed for 7-8 Izatt Close, on land totalling 2608sq m.

The house at Izatt Cl last changed hands in 2004 for $268,000 and is a rental property.

It is triangular shaped with a wide street frontage.

The property at 8 Izatt Cl is on 1657sq m and last sold in 2005 for $435,000.

It is also a rental property – it was rented after just 10 days on the market in October.

It is a pentagon-shaped block.

The adjoining properties are at the end of the cul-de-sac.

Behind the proposal are developers GBH Property Unit Trust, Bronwyn Madden and BGH Nominees.

They are proposing a building with a height of 14.8m that will have 38 ground floor car spaces.

It will comprise 12 two-bedroom units and 10 three-bedroom units as well as communal recreation areas including barbecue facilities and a picnic shelter, lawn areas with a pergola, and raised vegetable beds.

WildPLAN town planning firm director Dominic Hammersley said council’s planning scheme encouraged the development.

“Cairns has to put more medium density housing stock on the ground to beat the housing shortage it is experiencing right now,” Mr Hammersley said.

“Cairns is expected to grow by 100,000 more people over the next 30 years, and we need to be delivering homes for those people in appropriate locations.

“Next door to Edge Hill’s restaurant and botanical gardens precinct is the perfect location for high quality medium density housing – it’s exactly the type of development we want to see in Cairns,” Mr Hammersley said.
