YOUNG THESPIANS GET IN ON THE ACT

- DYLAN NICHOLSON FAR North Queensland’s peak theatre acting academy

is opening its doors to aspiring young actors and anyone else who is theatrecurious on Saturday.

JUTE Actors Studio is starting 2023 with a free open day at its Bulmba-ja Arts Centre home, 96 Abbott Street, Cairns.

The day will showcase its range of quality, experiencebased training, and performance opportunities, including a special term two collaboration with National Institute of Dramatic Art.

JUTE Theatre Company’s artistic director and chief executive Suellen Maunder said the JAS open day was for anyone interested in the discovering the magic of theatre and training in acting for stage as an extracurricular activity.

“From shy to extrovert, absolutely anyone and everyone will benefit from participating in acting classes that build confidence, selfawareness, resilience, and a whole set of skills for dealing with life,” Ms Maunder said.

“Our curriculums have been created for kids and young adults with a sense of play and whose imagination and intelligence underpins a goal to act, write or work in theatre.

“We will be presenting free trial classes along with a fun meet and greet with our wonderful facilitators, Natalie Taylor, and Amber Grossman and the JUTE team.

“So, if you or someone you know has ever thought about acting or working in theatre, this is the time and the place to find out.”

In 2023 JAS offers three streams of class training from beginner through to advanced level.

JAS JNR is for beginners and intermediate actors (9-12 years) while JAS Intermediate is for beginners and intermediate emerging actors (13-17 years).

Facilitated by Amber Grossman, entry into JAS Professional Pathways program (15-18 years) is by audition and is for advanced actors only.

The JAS Professional Pathways program culminates in one main stage production in November 2023.

According to Ms Maunder, auditions will also be staged during the open day for entry into the JAS Professional Pathways program (15-18 years) that includes an eightweek workshop and 16 hours of free acting training with NIDA’s new regional Connect program for JAS Intermediate and JAS Professional Pathways actors in term 2.

“JUTE’s partnership with NIDA in jointly presenting term 2 workshops is an extraordinary opportunity for JAS actors and with class sizes limited, preference will be given to existing enrolments,” she said.
