Commitment is recognised
Apsley educator Tanya Turner is West Wimmera Shire Council’s Citizen of the Year.
She received her award from Mayor Bruce Meyer during the municipality’s Australia Day celebrations.
“Tanya is an enthusiastic and committed contributor to the small community of Apsley and volunteers her time and expertise for the benefit of the widercommunity,” Cr Meyer said.
“In addition to her role of principal at Apsley Primary School, Tanya is involved with Apsley Action Group, Apsley Alive, Apsley Alligators Play Group, Edenhope-apsley Netball, Apsley Angling Club and Bringalbert Foreshore Committee.”
Apsley Racing Club won community event of the year for its 2016 cup meeting.
Cr Meyer said the cup, established in 1855, was run by an enthusiastic and dedicated committee from the Apsley district.
“The Apsley Cup is an important social event for the district and generates direct benefits for the local economy,” he said.
“It has developed successful partnerships with industry, and added the Tour De Frances to the weekend’s activities.”
Jonathon Kyle won the shire’s young citizen award.
“Jonathan is a fine young man from Kaniva, and eagerly volunteers his time and enthusiasm to a wide range of community projects,” Cr Meyer said.
“He consistently steps forward to help groups ranging from Kaniva Scouts and Landcare, to Kaniva Fauna Park and local sporting groups.
“He displays compassion, motivation and a willingness to help others in everything he does.”
