Good cod catches

-

Horsham Angling Club had a great weekend at Lake Charlegrark in the west Wimmera, hooking plenty of Murray cod.

Most of the fish were too small to take home and had to be released. On the other end of the scale, Rod Garth landed a 78-centimetre cod, which was too big and also had to be released.

Murray cod dominated the prize list with Alastair Vanstan winning the open section with a 2.931-kilogram fish.

Rod Gardy’s 2.221kg fish won an open section from Lockie Greig, 2.167, Nev Hinch 2.127 and Justin Garth, 1.944.

Kobi Lang won the juniors with a 2.3228kg cod from Curtis Vanstan who went against the trend with a 0.518kg redfin. Both juniors were fishing from kayaks.

Stawell Angling Club had a points-run competition, attracting 31 senior and five anglers at Lake Fyans.

Anglers caught 30 fish and Mark Mcgee had the heaviest fish, a redfin weighing 0.784kg.

First place went to Ray Howard with three redfin weighing in at 1.740kg and second place went to Steve Field with five reddies at 1.692kg.

Mark Mcgee was third with three redfin weighing 1.470kg.

The points run junior competition went to new member Riana Drendel, catching her first fish, a redfin weighting 0.35kg.

The Lake Fyans action reflects how redfin are on the bite across the Wimmera.

Anglers at Lake Fyans are catching good fish on yabbies, chatterbaits and soft plastics.

At Lake Wartook in the heart of the Grampians, as well as Toolondo Reservoir south of Horsham, the fish are interested in small hard-body lures.

At Rocklands Reservoir redfin are taking most baits and lures with a few big fish among a lot of little fish.
