Building resilience

-

Renowned motivational speaker and presenter Sacha Kaluri has encouraged Dimboola Memorial Secondary College students to build their resilience to overcome bullying.

Student wellbeing co-ordinator Sue Kuhnell organised Ms Kaluri’s visit as part of the school’s focus on respectful relationships.

“Ours is a lead school in Respectful Relationships education, set out by the Department of Education,” she said.

“Sacha’s visit was one of the ways we aim to empower youth to improve their welfare and wellbeing.”

Mrs Kuhnell said Ms Kaluri’s visit was well received.

“It’s always nice to have a professional come and talk to the kids as opposed to the teachers they see every day,” she said. “Sacha spoke to the year seven to 10 students about resilience in relationships to bullying.

“The year 10 to 12 session was a bit more interactive. It was about respectful relationships as well, but with more of a focus on their future career pathways.

“Sacha spoke to the kids about being respectful and about being resilient and not giving in.”

Mrs Kuhnell said students had a mixed response to Ms Kaluri’s messages. “Sacha’s talk resonated really well with some, but not all,” she said.

“She certainly sparked discussion. A lot of teachers and students were talking about it afterwards.”
