Bronson joins class

-

Wimmera youngsters have gained greater insight into pet safety and responsibilities as part of a State Government program.

Pet educator Cecilia Myers, one of several educators working across the state, and her dog Bronson, visit a variety of schools.

They dropped into Horsham West Primary School earlier this month.

The Department of Economic Development, Jobs Transport and Resources has developed the Responsible Pet Education Program, which has involved 800 schools and 1500 kindergartens in the past year.

The educator team has provided the service for the past 12 years.

The program focuses on teaching children how to be safe if they meet an angry or scared dog, and how to say hello to a dog the correct way. It also includes safety aspects about children and dogs at home.

The visits outline the importance of choosing a pet that suits a family lifestyle and environment; safety, security and registration; pet welfare; strategies in approaching an unknown animal; and a need to consider native animals in relation to cats and dogs.

People seeking more information about the program can go online and visit www. pets.info.vic.gov.au.
