Sisters to step up with their stories

-

Women have left an indelible mark on Wimmera and Mallee landscapes for thousands of years through their activities, influence or wisdom.

On Saturday at Wonwondah Hall, north-west Victorian speakers will tell stories from the countless courageous, determined, smart and caring women who have lived and left a formidable footprint on the region.

Entitled, Sisters in Step, the event is part of the Art is… a footprint festival program.

Speakers include Rainbow artist Belinda Eckermann who swapped the hills of north-east Victoria for the southern Mallee and in the process found love and discovered that creatures such as snails and native bardi grubs can be useful artistic partners.

The audience will hear from Dianne Dickson who left the region to follow her artistic career but has returned to set up an artist’s residence in her home town, and from Rita Bikins, a ‘city girl’ who came for a weekend tree planting and ended up living on the edge of the Grampians.

Organisers are keen to hear more stories and encourage people to attend Sisters in Step armed with their own tales about their lives or those of people they know who have left a footprint on the region.

Speakers have to answer two questions: How has living in this local landscape influenced who you or a friend or family member are and what you do or they have done? How have you or your subject left a footprint on this landscape through actions, words, influence or knowledge?

People can register their attendance via email to artis@ wimmera.com.au or by calling 5381 0297 by the end of tomorrow. The event is from 2pm to 5pm, costs $5 and includes an afternoon tea.
