- BY SARAH SCULLY

Wimmera Kart Racing Club member Darcie Landrigan is among karters gearing up for round four of the Victorian Country Series at Dooen Raceway on Sunday. Club leaders have encouraged Wimmera people to attend the event, which starts with a practice day on Saturday.

Wimmera Kart Racing Club acting president Shane Souter has encouraged the community to take advantage of an action-packed weekend of racing at Dooen.

The club will host round four of the Austrans Victorian Country Series on Sunday, following a practice day on Saturday.

Horsham hosts a round of the series each year, along with Ballarat, Cobden, Hamilton, Portland and Warrnambool.

Each competition has individual winners, with a series champion crowned at the end of the season.

“We’re all geared up and right to go this weekend,” Mr Souter said.

“We’re about 98 percent ready so it’s just about putting on the finishing touches.”

Wimmera karter Remo Luciani will compete at Dooen Raceway.

“Remo has just won his 69th state title and will definitely be one to watch,” Mr Souter said.

“We have 13 classes on the weekend, ranging from seven-year-old kids until as old as you like.”

Mr Souter said entries were down this year, although he expected numbers to pick up by the weekend.

“We find at this time of year people weather watch to see if it’s going to rain,” he said.

“We have about 100 entries at the moment and we usually have about 200. We could have a big rush in the next few days, which has happened before.”

Mr Souter said the series provided fun for people of all ages.

“We have a fully functioning canteen over both days and free entry for spectators,” he said.

“We really encourage people to come out and have a look around. People can walk through the pits and talk to the contestants and the mechanics.

“Everyone is really accessible and happy to talk about the sport with onlookers. Kids love sitting in a kart and having their photo taken, so it is a good family day out.”

Sunday’s qualifying rounds start at 8am, followed by first and second heats and finals.
