Murtoa at schools cup

- BY DAVID BERRY

All eyes will be on a Murtoa College year-nine girls team as it competes in State Schools Cup competition at Melbourne’s State Volleyball Centre this weekend.

Under the watchful eye of coach Shaun Bray, the girls will compete in division one of a year-nine level against teams from metropolitan Melbourne and Maffra.

The majority of the team is made up of players who participated in a school elective program in the first semester, while the remainder has had its grounding through a Volleyball Horsham Academy program.

Bray said the team had been working hard throughout the build-up to the event and would go in confident of performing well.

The team will be well served by state players Laelah Robertson and Cleo Baker, while Hannah Whyte and Kira Smith will play key roles.

Jay Farlow, Jade Saligari, Rhiannon Oxley and Jessie Delahunty make up the team. Their first game is at 5pm on Friday.

Volleyball Horsham is gearing up for another big season with team numbers increasing.

An influx of players wanting to play A Grade has increased the number of teams to six, while numbers at junior level are also looking strong.

The highlight for A Grade is the continued development of the St Brigid’s College boys, who, after winning C and B grades in the past two seasons, will now step up into the top grade.

The boys have been split into two teams and have been allocated two stronger players to aid in their development.

The push for an all-female competition has been successful, with seven teams registering. This will give the girls an opportunity to have more fun and enjoy their game each week.

There is still time to submit team or individual entries.

People can put their names forward until the close of business tomorrow.
