Old-time dancing in full swing

-

Old-time dancing at Horsham’s Hamilton Lamb Memorial Hall is in full swing, with good attendance despite cold weather.

Proceeds from dances at the hall on the first and third Tuesday nights of each month are donated to the Cancer Council.

Dawn Hobbs and June Jelly have run these events for many years after dances at the Jung hall stopped.

Committee member Susan Hogan said a keen group of dancers gathered at Hamilton Lamb hall at about 7pm, with Bruce and Susanne Beattie and Kylie Walker providing ‘laidback’ dance tuition.

“Everyone is encouraged to get up and try,” she said.

“A cuppa and biscuit supper is provided and the easy dance program begins at 7.30pm.

“It is pleasing to see people supporting these dances and thus supporting cancer research.”

The hall committee hosts its monthly dance on the second Friday of each month at 8pm.

Music is provided by Don Papst, Shirley Petschel or Carmel Phelan.

“Once again the program is based on dances done on the Tuesday night, with requests as well,” Ms Hogan said.

“These are relaxed evenings where everyone is encouraged to get up and try doing the dances.”

The committee hosted its anniversary dance in August.

Prizes went to Harold and Noreen King, best-dressed couple; Marge Krelle, best-dressed lady; Jenny Mitchell, happiest dancer; and Ed and Enid Schultz, happiest couple.

“We thank Horsham Sports and Community Club, Horsham RSL and Café 22 once again for providing gift vouchers for prizes on the night,” Ms Hogan said.

Shirley Petschel played at the September dance.

“She was at times accompanied by ‘Allan from Robe’ either playing the saxophone or bursting into song,” Ms Hogan said.

“It was a lovely evening and we hope Allan and his wife enjoyed their trip to the Wimmera.”

The next dances will be at the hall on October 13, with music by Shirley; November 10 and December 8, music by Carmel; and New Year’s Eve, music by Don.

“Please come along and support old-time dancing locally,” Ms Hogan said.
