Kealy: Reducing speed limits lazy

-

Member for Lowan Emma Kealy has described suggestions the State Government might limit the speed limit on some unsealed country roads to 70 kilometres an hour as ‘lazy policy’.

She said the Daniel Andrews government had cut $160-million from the maintenance of country roads and bridges across country Victoria and was now trying to deal with the inevitable fallout with a band-aid fix.

“Our roads have deteriorated significantly as a result of Labor’s funding cuts, with many stretches of road subject to temporary speed restrictions because of their state,” she said.

Ms Kealy said crumbling roads was one of the biggest issues in western Victoria, with dangerous the RACV declaring the region’s roads the worst in the state.

“Roads across the Lowan electorate are riddled with pot holes, putting local lives at risk and causing considerable damage to vehicles,” she said.

“The solution is to provide adequate funding to maintain and upgrade our country roads and not Daniel Andrews’ lazy response to reduce the speed limits to 70 kilometres an hour on unsealed roads.

“Rural and regional councils have consistently called for the return of the Liberal Nationals’ Country Roads and Bridges Program, axed by Daniel Andrews and his Labor Government.”
