Marathon training pays off

-

Vicki Tyler has finally scored a victory in a Stawell Amateur Athletics Club event, winning a 10-kilometre handicap race

“I was so happy to have a win. It’s been a while. In the past few races I have been trailing Sharon Howden,” she said.

The Horsham district runners have both been training for marathons – Tyler for the Melbourne marathon next month and Howden competed in an Adelaide marathon last month.

In the past few races the pair could be seen slugging it out, Howden in front and Tyler not far behind. Howden’s win in the previous race cost her with a bigger handicap, giving Tyler enough space for her win.

Stephanie Schulz ran second, 52 seconds behind Tyler, while Howden managed third just one minute 15 seconds behind the winner.

This was Schulz’s second race with the club. She started ahead of Tyler but hung on grimly to retain second place.

Longer distance must suit Schulz, because in her previous five-kilometre race she came 12th.

Tyler aims to run the Melbourne marathon on October 15 in a time of four hours. She will have husband Kel also running in the event.

In a one-kilometre sub-juniors race, Tom Urquhart prevailed over Olivia Hunter and Jay Jay Nitschke came third.

A five-kilometre Lois Trimble King of the Mountain race will be at Halls Gap on Saturday.

Runners will gather at Halls Gap oval 9.30am. Fun runners are welcome.

Two races remain in the cross-country season after the weekend, a three-kilometre championship on September 30, and a five-kilometre race at Big Hill on October 6. at
