Central Park expansion
Stawell’s historic Central Park precinct is set to expand as a result of Northern Grampians Shire Council’s purchase of a former Waites Robson Stonemasons site next to the reserve.
The council’s infrastructure department is working alongside landscape architects to develop a plan for the site at 2-8 Main Street.
A council 2000 Central Park masterplan originally identified the site as a key part of the reserve development.
Where appropriate, the council will repurpose the infrastructure on the site to cut down on spending.
Northern Grampians mayor Tony Driscoll said the expansion would add to Central Park’s attraction and ability to host major events, such as the Stawell Gift.
“The opportunity to add to Central Park’s already outstanding reputation as one of regional Victoria’s most impressive recreation facilities is an exciting one,” he said.
“Each year, thousands of people visit the Central Park precinct for the Stawell Gift and other major events, and this expansion will only boost the precinct’s attraction.
“Functionality and the needs and wants of the wider Northern Grampians Shire community will be at the forefront of our planning and vision for this site, and we will ensure that our plans meet those criteria.
“The acquisition of this land has been a long-term strategic objective of the council, and one that we think is the final piece in the puzzle when it comes our vision for Central Park.”
