Students unite to honour teacher

Horsham West and Haven Primary School staff and students have thrown their support behind Movember in honour of late teacher Jason Weir.

The school kicked off a big month of activities last week by donning blue clothing for an out-of-uniform day.

Blue is the colour of Movember, which raises money for men’s mental health and cancer programs.

Junior school council president Claudia Lopez O’donnell said the students gathered together to form a big ‘blue ribbon’ to remember the things Mr Weir did to brighten everyone’s lives.

Grade six student Amy Schmidt said the event was an opportunity to reinforce how important it was to remind people – particularly men – to undergo medical check-ups.

Fellow grade six student Chloe Brennan said her school was passionate about supporting men’s health.

“It’s very important to talk about your problems and seek help,” she said.

“We are excited for the upcoming events involving Movember and we know this month will be big, loud, weird and full of bad puns.”

Other events planned for the month include an Xbox competition; teacher challenges such as limbo, the beep test and a hula-hoop contest; and a colouring competition.
