Kealy queries service costs

Member for Lowan Emma Kealy wants to know why women with breast cancer or considered high risk of developing breast cancer pay $200 for a mammogram or ultrasound in Horsham.

She asked the question in State Parliament, adding the service was free of charge in Ballarat and Melbourne.

Ms Kealy said that while regular breast screening in Horsham was free of charge, mammograms and ultrasounds were considered a diagnostic service and therefore attracted the $200 fee.

Ms Kealy said she was concerned the cost might lead women in western Victoria to delay having the important diagnostic procedure.

“The problem is further compounded by poor public transport links to Ballarat, which are getting worse due to cancelled services and longer travel times,” she said.

“I have requested the Minister for Health to explain to the women of my electorate why it costs so much to get a mammogram and ultrasound in Horsham – when it is free for women in Ballarat and Melbourne.”
