Influx of basketball talent for classic
Horsham and Dimboola welcomed an influx of basketball talent at the weekend for the 2017 Intersport Horsham Junior Classic.
Horsham Amateur Basketball Association publicity director Tony Sleep said the tournament was a great success, with more than 500 juniors representing 70 teams contesting the two-day event. “The weekend went really well,” he said. Games were played in several locations in Horsham and Dimboola.
Mr Sleep said Horsham teams experienced mixed results.
The Hornets under-16 boys led the way, winning their division-one grand final, with the club’s under-12 boys, under-14 girls and under-16 girls squads also qualifying for grand finals.
“Our 12 teams competed well and while only one home team came away champions, we are very pleased with the progress all teams are making,” Mr Sleep said.
Ararat Basketball Association also tasted success at the tournament, with the Redbacks under-18 boys winning their division-one title and under-16 girls winning a division-two title.
The association’s under-16 and under-12 boys also contested their respective grand finals.
Mr Sleep said the tournament provided a boost for the Wimmera’s economy.
“We had so many teams visiting and spending money in the region,” he said.
He said the association welcomed the support from visitors and the community.
“We were also lucky enough to have Member for Lowan Emma Kealy and Horsham mayor Pam Clarke come along and present trophies on Sunday and we would like to thank them very much for being part of the proceedings,” he said.
