Celebrating 50 years

-

Horsham Film Society will use its 2018 season launch on Monday to celebrate a major milestone.

The society has turned 50 and members are keen to recognise the occasion to reflect on the decades of providing Wimmera people with unique cinema experiences.

The opening night of the 2018 season at Horsham Centre Cinemas will feature 2016 Iranian drama-thriller The Salesman, which attracted a best-actor award at 2016 Cannes festival and Best Foreign Film category success at the Academy Awards.

Society president Janet Heard said the group had already celebrated its 50-year formation birthday and was now celebrating 50 years of screening films.

“This is an occasion we can’t just let slip by, so we’re celebrating the milestone as part of our opening night of the season,” she said.

“As part of the celebration we will be having singers from Voices of the Wimmera performing some of the musical score from the first movie we screened – Dr Strangelove. There will also be drinks and nibbles.”

Horsham Film Society has had a membership consistently above 100 and a committee of 20.

Mrs Heard said the society was for people who had a simple love of film but also provided something that people could attend as individuals, groups, males and females.

“As a member it is really quite cheap entertainment,” she said.

“If you sign up for the year you get a great deal – an opportunity to see 10 movies and other benefits for $70. It’s open to anyone and any age group.

“It’s also a really nice way for people new to Horsham to meet people in a friendly environment.”

The film society now also has a Facebook site where people can gather day-to-day information.

People can also call Mrs Heard on 0419 570 273 for more details.
