Finals race heating up

- BY JONATHAN BOX

The finals race is heating up in Mininera and District football with Lismorederrinallum dropping out of the top five and SMW Rovers taking its place.

This contrasts with the top of the ladder, where Wickliffe-lake Bolac appears entrenched, having answered every challenge that has come its way so far this season.

With only two wins separating the teams from second to sixth place on the ladder, everyone will be putting its best foot forward to gain a finals berth.

Ararat Eagles are the next in line to take on the Wickliffe-lake Bolac juggernaut, which made short work of last year’s premiers on Saturday.

The Magpies led Lismore-derrinallum from the first bounce. It was a nine-goal-totwo final term that sealed their opponent’s fate.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, coming off a 34-goal loss to Tatyoon, it does not look like the situation will be any better this week.

Ararat Eagles only managed two goals in the massive loss to the Hawks last weekend, where Tatyoon almost kicked nine goals a quarter.

The Eagles have another big task this week when they try to impede the Magpies.

After its dominating win last week, Tatyoon takes on Hawkesdale-macarthur.

Tatyoon has its work cut out to secure second spot on the ladder.

Adrian Pilgrim had a day out in front of goal for the Hawks last week with 10, while Sean Mcdougall contributed five in a best-on-ground performance.

The Hawks should have another good win this week against Hawkesdale-macarthur.

The Eagles had a tough day at the office on Saturday going down to SMW Rovers to the tune of 94 points.

The Eagles were only able to manage one goal up until half time. The second half was a little better, walking away with four goals, however the damage was already done.

It will be another big ask for the Eagles this week when they travel to Tatyoon.

Great Western had a significant win over Caramut, following a national club win for brothers Rhys and Hugh Matheson in the Lions’ winning reserves team.

The brothers played in honour of their late father and former Great Western club president Rodney, who died suddenly earlier this season.

AFL NSW and AFL Victoria ensured permits were in place to allow the brothers, who play in different leagues, to represent the Lions.

In other games, Lismore-derrinallum will try to keep its finals hopes alive when it takes on Glenthompson-dunkeld, Great Western hosts Moyston-willaura, Penshurst will travel to Woorndoo to take on Woorndoo-mortlake and SMW Rovers will be searching for their seventh win in a row when they host Caramut.
