Hunt joins angling promotion
Angling icon and long-time sporting personality Rex Hunt joined Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford in Ararat to promote a 2018 Vicfishkids program.
Hunt also joined children in dropping a line into Alexandra Lake.
The State Government announced Ararat as the location of one of five fishing clinics across the state in September and October.
The Ararat event will be at Alexandra Lake on October 21, from 10am to 2pm.
The free fishing clinics are part of a State Government push to help get more children outdoors and to make the most of recreational fishing opportunities.
Vicfishkids events are designed to be fun and provide all equipment so children can learn the various skills involved in fishing such as casting, tying knots and understanding what to do when they caught a fish.
Ms Pulford said the government’s Target One Million plan was about getting more people fishing more often.
“That’s exactly what these events will do,” she said. “These events will help kids try the popular pastime in a safe environment and with expert help from Fishcare and angling club volunteers.
“Right across the Wimmera, there is a perfect spot to cast a line and try your luck at a fun and family-friendly pastime.”
Victorian Fisheries Authority is hosting the events.
There will be 200 rod and reel outfits given away at each event to encourage beginners to continue the hobby.
